Photographer/Writer

Welcome to my website! My name is Lee Petersen, I am a photographer, writer, climber and climbing coach, outdoorsman, cook, web designer, and scientist. Here you can read my stories of adventures and travel, view my photography, learn how to take aurora photos, and discover things to do around Fairbanks and the rest of Alaska.

I am currently available for freelance photography, writing, or web design. My photography and writing focus is primarily outdoors-related (hiking, climbing, biking). Feel free to contact me for more information. Check out more on my about page or my full résumé.

Otters preparing to jump off an iceberg in Columbia Bay

I’ve only been getting really interested in wildlife photography over the last three years. It is becoming on of the most enjoyable and rewarding pursuits in my life. I’ve been amassing a collection of bear, sea otter, seal, sea lion, dall sheep, and moose photos from around Alaska. You can view my wildlife portfolio at the link below.

My passion for landscape photography started with my hobby of taking photos and love of hiking and the outdoors. It wasn’t long after I started hauling my DSLR along on backpacking trips that I realized I was hiking, climbing, or skiing to seek out the coolest landscapes I could find.

aurora borealis from Granite Tors

Probably the biggest draw to Alaska in the winter months is the hope to view the northern lights. I love being able to step out on my front porch at night and see the sky lit up in green. Even more, I love being able to hike out to beautiful locations and view the aurora borealis from my tent door.

columbia glacier

In my 10 years in Alaska, I’ve seen a drastic shrinking of most of the glaciers that I hike to and on. Some of these will be nearly gone in my lifetime and photos will be all we have to remember them. Unfortunately, whatever your political stance is doesn’t seem to matter to the glaciers.

birch trees with snow

The interior of Alaska is mainly covered by boreal forest. White spruce, black spruce, birch, aspen, tamarack, and balsam poplar are really all we have for native trees. The forests are gorgeous and one of the main reasons I love living here. Although, since I do a lot of hiking when I travel there is more than just boreal forest in the collection.

A lot of snow falls up here covering the mountains of the Trinity Basin of the Alaska Range in ice. This is part of the small remaining accumulation area of the Black Rapids Glacier. I’m amazed at how such a conglomeration of ice and snow can take the appearance of simply being draped over the mountains. (No watermark on print)

Not a minute after that eruption on the horizon this auroral corona danced overhead and seemed to last for a really long time. Usually only appearing for a few seconds, I think I had about a minute of shooting this one. In the center, you might be able to make out the big dipper, but the stars were pretty dim compared to the northern lights that night!

Parhelia over Black Rapids Glacier – 5″x10″ Float Metal Print (Copy)

1 in stock / Shipping Available

I photographed this awesome sight while doing field work out on the Black Rapids Glacier in the eastern Alaska Range. The view is to the southeast and you can see the Loket Tributary flowing into the main branch of the glacier center-right. Living in Fairbanks (a little under 100 miles north of here) we get to see a lot of optical phenomena from ice in the atmosphere. In the winter we frequently see halos and parhelia (sun dogs). It’s pretty rare to see the tangent arc and even rarer to see a parhelic circle – the line that continues ‘horizontally’ from the sundog. At times this made a full 360° circle around our heads from camp. The stitching together of this 14 image panorama was not fun and it isn’t perfect, but I think it came out nice enough. Winter Sunrise – 5″x10″ Float Metal Print

1 in stock / Shipping Available

This is a pretty typical mid-winter scene in the Alaska Interior. There’s not much wind in Fairbanks, so the snow sticks to the trees for a while. The sun is always low on the horizon when it’s up around winter solstice, so it never gets much past the sunrise stage. Beautiful light makes up for the lack of light. (No watermark on print)
